Innovation Technique The method- Not playing what you know.
- The performer will endeavour not to play patterns, harmonic movement, melodies, or other devices that they have ever practiced, or previously conceived of, or previously had a conception of.
- Before emitting any sound from their instrument, the performer will endeavour to play a composition, melody or segment that the performer has never played or conceived of before.
- Through practise of this technique the performer will develop an inate underlying consciousness, or deliberate internal understanding, that will allow them to avoid playing patterns, harmonic movement, melody or devices that they have practiced or played before.
- The performer will practise the method thoroughly so that the 'rules' do not dominate the performer's consciousness. As is common with other improvisation methodologies the artist will practice the method until the process becomes natural and fluid so that the rules do not have to dominate the performer's mind space. (This way the performer can also enjoy, or at least observe and participate in the uniqueness of the experience when using this technique as it unfolds)
- The method obliges the performer to create something new.
